new players? i would think they're rather concerned atm about not losing ALL existing players as things are and are developping atm.

as for steam, BP has it's own selection of ...free  games

Is the population dropping, if so why, what's going on? also some games that have their own launcher does eventually come to steam, which is the reason why i was wondering.

There's a laundry list of reasons, but a few highlights:

    • Feedback on functionality, content and events is ignored
    • Bug reports are ignored (unless they aid BP bottom line)
    • Favorite events have been shelved
    • New events have been for the most part disastrous, with mediocre rewards, excessive grinds (and grinds within grinds ... some require 5-8 hours of daily play for a week or more), excessive storage slot usage (the current event occupies upwards of 18 storage slots)
    • The new crafting system is expensive in terms of in-game resources (coins and/or andermant, junk gear) and ruined gear (involves a high degree of luck to craft an immediately useable item or a higher level component for the next crafting round), has been modified multiple times in the last few releases to make certain types of end-gamer crafting possible, maybe, but the details are fuzzy
    • Preivous Community Managers left the company; new CM refuses to communicate with us in the forum
    • Releases come without patch notes until after they're released; patch notes are sometimes laughably brief and incomplete
    • Every release seems to introduce new, non-trivial bugs
    • PVP is broken, in several ways (including twinking given tacit blessing by BP)
    • Character class balance ... isn't balanced, has become even more unbalanced in recent releases
    • In-game player-to-player communication is awkward
    • Grouping is awkward, and made worse by the class imbalance (typically, 2 classes are bypassed completely, a 3rd is relegated to dumb tanking, and only the 4th is desired for end-game boss kills)
    • The latest new content included an increase in max character level which threw end-gamers for a loop as they need to rework their toons (oh, and it wasn't announced until the release was live on the servers; nor were we give almost any information about any of the changes that occurred at the release; we're left on our own to figure things outs)
    • More importantly, gear stats changed dramatically at that release (including the introduction of some rather limited value enchantments, the elimiination and/or significant reduction in some useful enchantments [which further exacerbated the class imbalance]) ... base stats were added, which may turn into a positive gain for players, but absolutely no release notes / statistics on the new gear have been shared with the player base, so we're scrambling to figure out which items, base stats and enchantments are actually useful / optimal
    • Also at that major content / level increase release, new gems were introduced, as well as a second set of specialty gem (now called rune) slots (the rune slots appear to be a good thing, though see the caveat below) ... old gems weren't converted for free; instead, as each player levels to 50, they start to convert their gems using special refiners which are only available as rewards from daily quests or purchase form the in-house shop; the number of refiners awarded for daily quests is small, so older players with highly upgraded old-style gems will need months to convert all of them to the new-style gems
    • Simultaneously, one of the 3 old-style offensive gems (weapon speed Sapphires) was discontinued; players can continue to use their old Sapphires, or they can convert them to weapon speed runes ... this potentionally frees up some gem slots to allow for more increased damage or critical hit rate gems, but there's a catch: A couple months into the release, BP still hasn't decided how to allow us to convert the Sapphires, and, once converted, the new weapon speed runes can only be used in two-handed weapons; they can't go in weapon adornments (a second type of offensive gear) nor in one-handed weapons. For Rangers particularly (the class with which I'm most familiar), this presents a series of problems: Until this release, we only had shortbows and longbows, each classified as a one-handed weapon, which allowed us to equip a 3rd piece of gear, either a defensive-minded shield or an offensive-minded quiver. The release included new 2-handed siege bows which have superior base damage than the short or longbows, but foregoes necessary enchantments, such as high critical rate, and prevents us from using high-crit rate quivers, etc., so overall the new 2-handed bow setup is vastly inferior. So, we either leave our Sapphires as is (and can no-longer combine them into even faster gems), or convert them (in a still somewhat mysterious way) into speed runes which we can only use in siege bows, which cripples our crit rate / crit damage.
    • Oh, and the bosses in the end-game dungeons, called Parallel World dungeons, were buffed at the major release to the point that many players had to drop down in difficulty levels when entering dungeons, or simply gave up altogether on PW (until some possible future date when their characters have grown again to the point the PW bosses are manageable)

I'm sure other players can contribute many more issues (including more problems caused by that last major content release) but the above might give you a bit of a hint as to why the servers are shrinking.

Developers think that it's cool to add a new level of items every a couple of month so that you have to keep farming like a maniac to keep up with. I think I'm going to find a PvP game where there is not so high need of PvE !!!

Tegan has been a ghost town since R155 and has gone downhill steadily with each subsequent release.

dkarl gave the highlighted reasons as to why. As more players leave, DSO offers more cash items instead of attempting to fix the problems that cause players to leave.
